Ask the students to preview the grammar part. 2. Read the article in P9 and Circle out the difficult words and sentences. Step 1 Lead-in: 1. Ask the Ss to translate the sentence \"我想知道花儿为什么这样红\" E.g. I want to know why the flower is so red? Step 2 Four functions of noun clauses Function Example 1. Subject(主语) He makes me happy. That...makes me happy. It makes me happy that...(形式主语) 2. Object(宾语) Polly didn't know the way. Polly didn't know which way she should go.
a noun clause could be the object of a verb or a preposition E.g. I don't know who that tall man is. I am interested in who that tall man is. 3. Preparatory object (表语)The problem is difficult The problem is how Polly is going to find us. 4. Apposition(同位语) The news that he couldn't come made us upset. Step 3 Tell the functions of the underlined noun clauses. 1.That the earth is round is a fact. 2.Mrs Black won't believe that her son has become a thief. 3.My idea is that we should do it right now. 4. I had no idea that you were her friend. 5.How he was successful is still a puzzle. 6.I have no idea where he comes from. 7.The question is whether it is worth doing. 8.Why he did it wasn't quite clear. 9.That he will come is certain. 10.What is certain is that the curse of the mummy remains a riddle to this day.
