On February 3rd,1949,New York Harbor was an exciting place. Many people were there to greet a ship from France. On the ship were 49 French railroad boxcars filled with gifts from the people of France to the people of America. These boxcars were from the famous Merci Train(Merci:a French word meaning “thank you”).

After World War II,a lot of factories, roads and farms in France had been destroyed. Many French people had no jobs or money and had little to wear and little to eat. In the winter of 1947,a train was sent across the United States, stopping in cities and towns along the way. At every stop, people gave whatever they could. Factories gave clothing and medicine. Farmers gave food. Families gave money. Even school children gave away their pocket money. All the things were then taken to France by ship.

By 1949,the French had begun to recover from the war. The Merci Train was their way of saying “thank you” to America. French people had filled the boxcars with gifts. Most of them were personal, like hand - made toys, children’s drawings,or postcards. But the boxcars themselves were perhaps the most meaningful of the gifts. On each car,the French people had painted the pictures of all their 40 provinces. with

an American eagle on the front. The boxcars were taken to each state of America, where they were warmly greeted.

Now many of the states still keep their boxcars. Gifts sent by the French people can still be seen in some museums. The Merci Train came out of the war,but it now reminds the world that countries can also work together in peace.

Anna's dog, Jangles, was really weird. Whenever he was sleeping, he'd start kicking, and then he'd whimper. His feet would move like he was running. What exactly was he thinking about? She really wanted to know. If only there was a way to get in his dreams, but there wasn't, was there?

Jangles sniffed the air; he caught a scent. He turned his head and perked his ears, listening for a particular sound. His hearing made it easy to hear insects chirruping in the weeds, the grasses blowing in the field, and leaves rustling in the wind. He was listening for the creeping of a rabbit in the grass, though, and they were much harder to hear.

This rabbit was smart. It was frozen in place somewhere, not daring to move. He could almost hear its heart pounding wildly in its chest. He sniffed the air again, lifted a paw, and took a cautious step in the direction he suspected the rabbit was hiding. Another step and another followed.

Something bolted out of the tall grasses just ahead of him, darting sideways and then zigzagging madly. His eyes, ears, nose, and the whole of his body suddenly

focused on one thing. He tore after the rabbit, mouth suddenly dry with anticipation, heart racing with the thrill of the chase, and eyes narrowed in tunnel vision upon his prey.

He bounded over the grass, using the height of each leap to give him a better view of the small rabbit, which nearly disappeared in some of the taller grass. The rabbit darted to the side again, heading for trees. He dug in his paws and turned to follow,

baying in joy of the chase. The rabbit was so close. In just a couple more steps, he'd have it!

\"Jangles, wake up!\" Anna called, rubbing at his chest. She was petting him gently, but it was still startling to be shaken out of the dream, such a wonderful dream... \"You were having a nightmare!\" Anna said worriedly.

Jangles snorted. Nightmare? It was the best dream ever. The nightmare was the disappointment of being woken from it! Still, petting wasn't all that bad. He let Anna pet him for a while, and then he drifted back to sleep, hoping to see the rabbit again! 1. What is Anna curious about?

A. Where does Jangles hide at night? B. What does Jangles dream about?

C. What does Jangles do when she's at school? D. She's not curious about anything. 2. What sort of animal does Jangles hunt in his dream? A. a skunk B. a cat C. a fox D. a rabbit

3. How does Jangles seem to feel during the dream?

A. excited and happy B. scared and worried C. tired and lazyD. it doesn't really say 4. Why does Anna wake Jangles?

A. She thinks he is sick. B. She worries he is having a nightmare. C. She is bored and wants to play. D. She woke him up on accident. 5. How does Jangles feel about being woken up? A. disappointed B. happy C. sad D. tired 参考答案:BDABA
