PREFACE

ThiseditionofthisstandardwaspreparedbytheAssociation’sCommitteeonScrewThreads,tosupersedeAS1275—1972.

SinceAS1275wasfirstpublished,themajorISOstandardsdealingwithmetricscrewthreads(seelaterlisting)havebeenrevised,andarenowinconflictwiththeinformationgiveninAS1275—1972.Thisisparticularlytruewithrespecttotherootcurvatureforexternalthreads,andthelimitsspecifiedforthethreadrootsofbothexternalandinternalthreads.

AfurtherimportantconsiderationisthattheISOstandardsformetricscrewthreadsarenowbeingadoptedvirtuallyunchangedbymostdevelopedanddevelopingcountries,andthereforeitisimportantthattheAustralianstandardsbealignedwiththeirISOcounterpartsasmuchaspossible.Thishasbeentheaiminthiseditionofthestandard.

DuringthepreparationofAS1275intheearly1970s,itwasnotedbythecommitteethattheISOsymbolsusedforthevariousscrewthreadparameterswereillogical,andsoamorelogicalsystemwasintroducedintheAustralianstandards.ThiswassupportedbysustainedcommenttoISO/TC1proposingtheAustraliansymbols.UnfortunatelytheAustralianproposalswerenotacceptedbyISO/TC1andtheoriginalISOsymbolswereretained.OneofthemajorchangesinthiseditionthereforehasbeentointroducetheISOsymbologyforthescrewthreadparameters.

Theothermajorchangeiswithregardtothelimitsgivenforthethreadrootsonbothexternalandinternalthreads.InAS1275—1972theselimitswerecompletelyspecified,whereasintheISOstandardsonlytheminimumminordiameterisspecifiedforexternalthreadsandthenominal(basic)majordiameterisgivenforinternalthreads;theactuallimitsbeingindirectlycontrolledbythelengthofstraightflanks.FurthermorearootcurvatureforexternalthreadsisonlyspecifiedforthreadsintendedforfastenersofpropertyClass8.8andabove.Allotherexternalthreadsmayhavearootconfigurationinaccordancewiththebasic/designprofile.

ItwasconsideredthattheISOapproachonthelimitsforthethreadrootswaspracticalandshouldbeadopted,becausethiswouldpermitmaximumflexibilityinmanufacturewithoutbeingundulydetrimentaltoeitherthestrengthofthescrewthreadortoitsassemblyproperties.However,theISOrootcurvatureforexternalthreads,takentotheextremecouldcauseproblemsbyintroducinganotcheffect,whichmayleadtofatiguefailureinthreadsinsomesteelswhichhaveahightensileleveland/orhavebeenseverelycoldworked.Acautionarystatementtothiseffecthasthereforebeenincludedinthisstandard.

ThisstandardhasbeenbasedonandisincompletealignmentwiththefollowingISOstandards:ISO68—1973ISOGeneralPurposeScrewThreads—BasicProfileISO261—1973ISOGeneralPurposeMetricScrewThreads—GeneralPlanISO262—1973ISOGeneralPurposeMetricScrewThreads—SelectedSizesforScrews,Bolts
