ApplicationsRF BOM vs. Application Requirements
Introduction
Components around RF transceivers can be classified into four families:•RF filtering of out-of-band high-level jamming such as pagers' Base Stations, portable phones. These are the most expensive parts (e.g. SAW).
•
IF filtering to protect against other users of the ISM bands. The 10.7 MHz onesare very cheap, while the 455 kHz are rather expensive but the only solution toachieve (very) narrow channels.
•Filtering and decoupling of power supplies. These are always very cheap(resistors, capacitors).
•
RF components such as antenna matching, loop filter, etc.
Thanks to the AT86RF211’s very high level of integration (incl. inductor, varactor), nocritical RF components have to be added outside of the chip with the exception ofsome low-cost R, L, C passives for antenna matching and loop filter. Printed inductorsfit very well.
As far as other components are concerned, such a super-heterodyne device is veryflexible and allows you to achieve a low cost BOM for standard applications, as wellas high performances (immunity, selectivity, etc.) for industrial systems: external filterscan be removed/chosen according to performance requirements. There is a wide vari-ety of filters, with various bandwidths and costs (simpler filters with discretecomponents are also possible) to meet any requirement. The same PCB layout canbe used for several applications (unique RF platform). This allows you to adapt theperformance to new requirements with minimal design efforts resulting in a very shorttime-to-market.

Notes:
1.The intrinsic immunity of the RF211 (high level of integration, architecture, etc.) makes it capable of meeting immunity
requirements (3 V/m) with no SAW filter and no shielding. 3 V/m corresponds to European standards.2.See “AT86RF211-BIBAND: Standard Dual-band Board with Printed Antenna and Inductors” on page 3.
3.See “AT86RF211DB-xxxLNA: High Sensitivity/Medium to Wide Channels Board with Printed Antenna and Inductors” on
page 7.
4.See “AT86RF211-DBxxx107: High Sensitivity/High Selectivity Board (Narrow Band)” on page 11.
5.A range (even measured in open field) is always difficult to guarantee since it depends on many parameters: sofware used,
choice of criteria to say the link is OK (e.g. Bit Error Rate), nature of the measurement field (ground, obstacles, antennas),shape of the product, etc... 3-400m are generally required for applications within a home. Values given are typical for 868 or915 MHz bands. In the 400-450 MHz one, the range is more than twice the given value.6.Using SMD inductors instead of printed ones. Also leads to +3 dB power.
7.Values given with a very low-cost discrete LNA. -120 dBm is achievable with integrated LNAs.8.IF2 filters BW from 10 to 35 kHz are available.9.IF1 filters BW from 110 to 300 kHz are available.

AT86RF211-DBxxx107: High Sensitivity/High Selectivity Board (Narrow Band)
Description
•
One single PCB for 433, 868 or 915 MHz applications: only a few components
corresponding to antenna, SAW filter matching, as well as harmonics filtering are specific to the frequency band.
Antenna: a SMA antenna is mounted on each board for test purposes. The industrial solution is a simple wire plugged into hole A2. Its size must be adapted to the frequency: 17.3 cm for the 433 MHz version, 8.6 cm for the 868 MHz version and 8.2 cm for the 915MHz version.

Recommendations
According to the ETSI300-220, the power must be clamped to +10 dBm ERP depending on the gain of the antenna used.Same remark.
According to FCC Part 15, radiated output power is limited to -1.25 dBm for a fixed
frequency system, and +30 dBm for a FHSS system.

915 MHz+7 dBm+11 dBm
General Note
The SMA connector and antenna provided are very friendly for quick measurements, radiatedor conducted, but are not allowed on a finished product (according to legislation, no removablepart is tolerated).•••

Multi-sourcing
The AT86RF211 is a fully integrated component that does not require any external critical RFcomponent. As a consequence, it is possible to use several different sources for all of them. The components mounted on our development tools/reference designs are described in thedifferent BOMs. The aim of this annex is to give examples of other suppliers. Please note thatthere is NEVER any TRUE second source for any component! For instance, another inductorwill have a different quality factor. As a consequence, switching from one supplier to anothermay require a slight adaptation of the nominal values.

T° drift, calibration, ageing: please refer to App Note “Understanding the Demodulation and Data Slicing Features – Implementing the DC Demodulation Capability”.ESR: be sure to get a crystal whose ESR < 100Ω.Drive Level ≥ 100 µW
Load capacitance: give the value given in the BOM. If another value is chosen, you will have to re-calculate the values of the external capacitors (refer to the datasheet for examples).

10.7 MHz Filters
Cheap ceramic filters (from 110 kHz to more than 250 kHz) can be purchased from:•••••••

Narrow filters (typ 50 kHz) are also possible:

455 kHz Filters
IF2 455 kHz filters are available from ±5 kHz to ±17.5 kHz 6 dB bandwidth. The data rate islimited to 20 kbits/s accordingly.
Note:
This filter can be removed for many applications (replaced by a > 1 nF capacitor), or made withdiscrete elements (please refer to the datasheet).

Important Note: It is always possible to use a SAW filter with another impedance, but thisnecessitates changing the matching network. Please refer to the datasheet to find the relevantimpedances.
