Will Christmas Replace the Spring Festival?
Christmas arouses increasing attention year by year in China. Christmas cards become popular with students. Peoplehold Christmas parties and exchange Christmas girts. A lot or TV and radio programs about Christmas are on. Meanwhile theSpring Festival is less appealing to youngsters. Thus some people wonder whether Christmas will replace the SpringFestival.
This worry is fairly unnecessary. Why ? One reason lies that Christmas only affects Christians, college students andjoint-venture workers. Another reason is that Christmas is mostly celebrated in cities. Few people in countryside showextreme interest in this exotic festival. By contrast, the Spring Festival is the most influential traditional festival in everyfamily.
I think,it is natural that with increasing exchanges with the West,a lot of Western holidays have been graduallyintroduced into China. For us Chinese we should never neglect or even discard our own traditional festivals. For centuriesChinese have observed this traditional holiday to welcome the beginning of a new year. And we will treasure the SpringFestival forever.

On New Year's Eve,our class had a party. The atmosphere was good. It was out of the ordinary from the very begining. The boy student from one bedroom gave an unusual performance. We saw a boy named Li Xinmin turn off all the lights in asudden snap. Then with three resounding(响亮的) crow of a cock echoing in the hall, the hall was again brightly lit in asnap.
Then, the representative of the bedroom Zhu Guozhang asked us to guess a line of a poem related to the above
situation. He added that Li Xinmin alone was born in the year of the dog and the other three were all born in the year of thechicken. They left us all in confusion. And it was our monitor who was quickwitted(机智的). He shouted our, \"The day
breaks as the cock crows three times at dawn.\" The hall After that, they had another item. This time Li Xinmin was placed inthe middle of the circle. While he was standing there, the other three stood around him, each bowing down to him at anangle of 120 degrees. It was an idiom. This time I got it right:\"The dog stands out among a group of chickens.\"

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation
systems of about half a month from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowdedwith home returnees.
The Spring Festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, often one month later than the Gregorian calendar. Itoriginated in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC-c. 1100 BC) from the people's sacrifice to gods and ancestors at the end of anold year and the beginning of a new one.
Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, the most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days. TheChinese government now stipulates people have seven days off for the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Many customs accompany the Spring Festival. Some are still followed today, but others have weakened. On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, many families make laba porridge, a delicious kind of porridge made withglutinous rice, millet, seeds of Job's tears, jujube berries, lotus seeds, beans, longan and gingko.
The 23rd day of the 12th lunar month is called Preliminary Eve. At this time, people offer sacrifice to the kitchen god.Now however, most families make delicious food to enjoy themselves.
After the Preliminary Eve, people begin preparing for the coming New Year. This is called \"Seeing the New Year in\". Store owners are busy then as everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year. Materials not only includeedible oil, rice, flour, chicken, duck, fish and meat, but also fruit, candies and kinds of nuts. What's more, various decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives, are all on the list of purchasing. Before the New Year comes, the people completely clean the indoors and outdoors of their homes as well as theirclothes, bedclothes and all their utensils.
Then people begin decorating their clean rooms featuring an atmosphere of rejoicing and festivity. All the door panelswill be pasted with Spring Festival couplets, highlighting Chinese calligraphy with black characters on red paper. The
content varies from house owners' wishes for a bright future to good luck for the New Year. Also, pictures of the god of doorsand wealth will be posted on front doors to ward off evil spirits and welcome peace and abundance.
The Chinese character \"fu\" (meaning blessing or happiness) is a must. The character put on paper can be pastednormally or upside down, for in Chinese the \"reversed fu\" is homophonic with \"fu comes\
\"fudaole.\" What's more, two big red lanterns can be raised on both sides of the front door. Red paper-cuttings can be seen onwindow glass and brightly colored New Year paintings with auspicious meanings may be put on the wall.
People attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. At that time, all family members eat dinner together. The meal ismore luxurious than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd cannot be excluded, for in Chinese, their
pronunciations, respectively \"ji\
whole family will sit together, chatting and watching TV. In recent years, the Spring Festival party broadcast on China CentralTelevision Station (CCTV) is essential entertainment for the Chinese both at home and abroad. According to custom, eachfamily will stay up to see the New Year in.
Waking up on New Year, everybody dresses up. First they extend greetings to their parents. Then each child will getmoney as a New Year gift, wrapped up in red paper. People in northern China will eat jiaozi, or dumplings, for breakfast, asthey think \"jiaozi\" in sound means \"bidding farewell to the old and ushering in the new\". Also, the shape of the dumpling islike gold ingot from ancient China. So people eat them and wish for money and treasure.
Southern Chinese eat niangao (New Year cake made of glutinous rice flour) on this occasion, because as a
homophone, niangao means \"higher and higher, one year after another.\" The first five days after t h e S p r i n g F e s t i v a l ar e a g o o d t i m e f o r r e l a t i v e s , f r i e n d s , a n d c l a s s m a t e s a s w e l l a s c o l l e a g u e s t o e x c h a n g e g r ee t i n g s , g i f t s a n d c h a t l e i s u r e l y . / p > p b d s f i d = \" 9 0 \" > 0 0 B u r n i n g f i r e w o r k s w a s o n c e t h e m o st t y p i c a l c u s t o m o n t h e S p r i n g F e s t i v a l .
