The invisible poverty in China
With the huge development in China in the recent years, especially the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and 2010 Shanghai Expo were held successfully. The foreign people think that China is becoming stronger and stronger and people are becoming richer and richer after the reform and opening-up policy.
Has China become a strong country and its people are all rich? I don’t think so. I think you need to see the two pictures.
First of all, almost all the visitors come to the eastern China. As it known to all, the economy in the eastern China is the best. The typical city is Shanghai, compared it to New York, it may not be the loser. However, what you think that China is a rich country is just in the east. If you go to the western China, you will scream when you see the living environment there. The phenomenon is different from the eastern China. There has no skyscraper you would just see the shabby houses. People who live there have no choice but suffer from the poverty. Because of the poverty they don’t have opportunity to get the good education. Then they become the lowest class in the society. And last they leave for the rich places to earn money support the family. They work hard just want to avoid the hunger.
Second, we need to turn our eyesight back to the eastern downtown. The poverty is just behind the colorful city. If you are lucky, you will see one picture. When the hotel’s waiters throw the guests’ left food into the rubbish bin, some beggars will run to the rubbish bin to pick the food as their lunch or dinner. Maybe,
you will say that it is common things in the big cities. But this picture has relationships with the first picture. Most the beggars are come from the remote areas, especially the western China. If they want to live in the society, they may lose the sanctity.
The invisible poverty is so frightening. You cannot see it. You cannot take actions to avoid it. But is it real?
